How Does Gavello Fleet Insurance Work?

You submit your fleet once, specialist providers compete for it on Gavello, and you choose which offer to take forward. Here’s what happens at each stage.

Tell Us About Your Fleet

Provide details of your business, vehicles, drivers, how the fleet is used and your current insurance.

Whether you run cars, vans, commercial vehicles or a mixed fleet, this information helps providers understand the risk they are being asked to consider.

Your Requirement Goes to the Gavello Marketplace

Gavello makes your requirement available to relevant participating providers through the platform.

Your contact details aren't shared at this stage, so the initial competition happens on Gavello rather than on your phone.

Specialist Providers Compete

Providers interested in insuring your fleet submit their offers through Gavello, and we alert you as each one arrives.

Every insurer has its own underwriting appetite, so a fleet that one provider is cautious about may suit another particularly well.

Compare Your Offers Online

Review every response in one place.

Weigh up price, proposed cover, excesses and other policy details without juggling several conversations at once.

You Choose the Provider

Found an offer you'd like to explore? Choose that provider and arrange a time for them to contact you. They will check your details and finalise the policy with you.

If none of the offers is right for your business, you don't have to proceed. The decision stays with you.

Why Is Gavello Different From Other Fleet Insurance Comparison Services?

Most commercial insurance comparison journeys collect your details and introduce the enquiry to brokers, who then contact you to discuss quotations.

Gavello uses a different model. Participating providers assess your fleet requirement and respond through the Gavello platform before you choose which provider you want to engage with.

This means the initial competition takes place between providers for your business, rather than you having to contact and manage multiple providers individually.

Why Businesses Use Gavello for Fleet Insurance

Enter Your Fleet Information Once

Your time matters. Rather than explaining your vehicles, drivers, business activities and insurance history to provider after provider, you create your fleet insurance requirement once on Gavello.

Providers Compete for Your Business

Gavello reverses the traditional quote process. Participating specialist providers compete for your fleet, giving you access to different pricing, policy structures and underwriting appetites.

Review Offers Before You Speak to Anyone

Getting a quote shouldn’t mean agreeing to a string of sales calls. You see the offers made for your fleet first, then decide who you want to engage with.

No Unwanted Calls From Multiple Providers

Traditional quote forms can trigger calls from several companies. On Gavello, only the provider you choose receives your contact details, at a time that suits you.

Compare More Than Just the Premium

The cheapest price isn’t always the most suitable policy. Compare each offer’s cover, excesses and features so you judge the overall proposition, not one headline figure.

No Obligation to Buy

Receiving offers through Gavello doesn’t commit you to buying insurance. Review your options and decide whether any of them are right for your business.

Fleet insurance explained

Straight answers to the questions UK businesses ask most often before comparing fleet insurance.

What Is Fleet Insurance?

Fleet insurance is a commercial motor policy that can cover multiple business vehicles under one policy. Depending on the provider, it may cover cars, vans, HGVs or mixed vehicle fleets, with different drivers and vehicle uses subject to the insurer's underwriting criteria.

How Does Fleet Insurance Work?

Your vehicles sit on one policy with a single renewal date. Drivers are covered on an any driver or named driver basis, subject to the policy conditions, and vehicles can usually be added or removed during the year. At renewal, insurers review the fleet's claims experience and any changes to vehicles, drivers or business use.

What Are the Benefits of Fleet Insurance?

The main benefits are simpler administration and flexibility: one policy and renewal date instead of many, the option to cover several drivers, and an easier way to add or remove vehicles as your business changes. For larger fleets, good claims experience and risk management can also be reflected in the price.

How Many Vehicles Do You Need for Fleet Insurance?

Fleet insurance can be available from as few as two vehicles with some providers, although minimum fleet sizes vary between insurers. Eligibility can also depend on vehicle type, business use, driver profile, claims history and previous fleet insurance experience.

Can You Insure Cars and Vans on the Same Fleet Policy?

Yes, many fleet insurers consider mixed fleets that combine cars, vans and larger commercial vehicles on one policy. Acceptance depends on the insurer, your business activity, how each vehicle is used and who drives, so give accurate details of every vehicle when you submit your requirement.

Who Can Drive Vehicles on Fleet Insurance?

It depends on the policy. An any driver policy covers anyone who meets its conditions, such as a minimum age or length of time holding a full licence, while a named driver policy covers only the people listed. Read our any driver fleet insurance guide.

How Much Does Fleet Insurance Cost in the UK?

There is no standard price. Premiums depend on the number, type and value of your vehicles, what they are used for, your drivers, where the vehicles operate, the cover and excess you choose, and your claims history. Offers for the same fleet can differ significantly because each insurer prices risk differently.

How Can Businesses Reduce Fleet Insurance Costs?

Well-managed fleets tend to be viewed more favourably. Regular licence checks, clear driver eligibility rules, telematics, driver training, documented maintenance, good security and prompt claims reporting may all help. See the HSE guidance on driving for work.

What Is the Difference Between Vehicle-Rated and Experience-Rated Fleet Insurance?

Smaller fleets are usually vehicle-rated, with the premium based mainly on the vehicles, drivers and use you declare. Larger fleets, often around 15 vehicles or more, may be experience-rated, where the fleet's own claims costs over the previous three to five years drive the price.

Why Is Fleet Insurance Hard to Compare Online?

Comparison websites work well for straightforward personal insurance. Commercial fleet insurance is different.

A fleet may include several vehicle types, many drivers, specialist trades, unusual patterns of use, previous claims and a vehicle schedule that changes through the year. Risks like these usually need specialist underwriting rather than an instant premium calculation, which is why fleet insurance quotes can be harder to get.

As a result, many traditional websites become lead-generation forms: you submit your information and brokers phone you afterwards.

Gavello is built around the way specialist insurance actually works. It combines online comparison with specialist providers, creating a marketplace where they assess your requirement and respond through the platform.

Technology doesn’t replace specialist underwriting. It makes specialist underwriting easier to reach.

A Marketplace Approach to Fleet Insurance Comparison

Gavello was created to bring an online marketplace to areas of insurance that conventional comparison technology has struggled to serve, and fleet insurance sits at the centre of that model.

Instead of treating your enquiry as a lead to be distributed, Gavello turns your insurance requirement into a marketplace opportunity. It is a fundamentally different relationship between the business looking for insurance and the companies competing to provide it.

1Providers compete.
2You compare.
3You choose.

What Vehicles Can Fleet Insurance Cover?

A fleet policy can bring several business vehicles under one policy instead of insuring each vehicle separately. Depending on the insurer and the risk, a fleet can include:

  • Company cars
  • Business vans
  • Mixed car and van fleets
  • Commercial vehicles
  • HGVs
  • Delivery and courier vehicles
  • Construction vehicles
  • Service and engineering vehicles
  • Sales fleets
  • Trades fleets
  • Logistics fleets
  • Specialist commercial vehicles

Eligibility, minimum fleet sizes and acceptable vehicle types vary between providers. Gavello presents your fleet to participating providers whose appetite may match your requirements.

Small, Medium or Large Fleet?

Gavello works for fleets of different sizes. Minimum fleet sizes vary between providers, so participating providers review each requirement on its merits.

Small Fleet Insurance

Running only a few vehicles doesn’t necessarily make your insurance simple. Small businesses can present their fleet to participating providers and compare the offers without losing valuable working time contacting brokers one by one.

Medium Fleet Insurance

As vehicle and driver numbers grow, insurance tends to become more complicated. A fleet policy can simplify administration, while Gavello gives you one place to manage the initial comparison.

Large Fleet Insurance

Larger fleets often involve detailed underwriting, vehicle schedules, claims experience and risk-management information. Gavello offers a digital route to specialist providers while keeping the human underwriting expertise that complex risks need.

Example of a mixed business fleetAn illustrative mixed fleet: three directors' cars, eight engineer vans, four delivery vans and one heavy goods vehicle, assessed together as one fleet.Example mixed fleetDifferent vehicles, drivers and usesDirectors' carsBusiness use, named drivers×3Engineer vansTools and equipment carried×8Delivery vansCarriage of own goods×4Heavy goods vehicleSpecialist commercial cover×1Assessed together as one fleet

Mixed Fleets? That’s Exactly Why Specialist Comparison Matters

Not every business runs ten identical vehicles.

You might have directors’ cars, vans used by engineers, vehicles carrying equipment and larger commercial vehicles all operating within the same business.

This is where conventional online quotation systems tend to struggle. On Gavello, providers consider the characteristics of your actual fleet rather than forcing your business into a one-size-fits-all consumer comparison journey.

Is Fleet Insurance Cheaper Than Individual Vehicle Insurance?

Fleet insurance isn’t automatically cheaper than insuring vehicles separately. The cost depends on the vehicles, drivers, claims history, business use and insurer. Its advantages can include simpler administration, one renewal date and the ability to manage multiple vehicles under a single policy.

Fleet insurance compared with separate vehicle policies
ConsiderationFleet policySeparate vehicle policies
Renewal datesOne renewal date for every vehicleA separate renewal date for each policy
Adding or removing vehiclesUsually handled as a change to the existing policyA new policy or a cancellation each time
DriversCan often be arranged on an any driver or named driver basisDrivers are usually named on each individual policy

PaperworkOne set of policy documentsSeparate documents for every vehicle
Often suitsBusinesses running several vehicles or planning to growVery small operations with a stable, experienced driver line-up

Our honest view: if you run only two or three vehicles with experienced drivers, separate policies can sometimes cost less. It is worth weighing up both before you decide, and you can still use Gavello to see what fleet providers offer.

Before You Request Fleet Insurance Quotes

Accurate information helps providers assess your fleet properly and makes it less likely that an offer will change when the provider checks your details.

What Information Do You Need for a Fleet Insurance Quote?

You may be asked for:

  • Number, type and value of vehicles
  • Your business activity
  • How the vehicles are used
  • Driver details and any driving restrictions
  • Claims history and fleet insurance history
  • Your current insurer
  • The cover you need
  • Your preferred policy start date

Larger or more complex fleets may need extra documents before a provider can confirm cover.

What Affects the Cost of Fleet Insurance?

Premiums are shaped by factors including:

  • The number, type and value of your vehicles
  • What the vehicles are used for, such as carriage of own goods or hire and reward
  • Where vehicles are kept and where they operate
  • Drivers’ ages, experience and licence history
  • Your fleet’s claims experience
  • The level of cover and excess you choose
  • Security, telematics and dashcams
  • Risk management, such as driver checks and vehicle maintenance

Every insurer weighs these factors differently, which is one reason offers for the same fleet can vary.

What Should You Compare Besides Price?

Price matters, but so does how the policy responds when you need it. Check:

  • Policy excesses
  • Driver and vehicle restrictions
  • Comprehensive or third-party cover
  • Windscreen cover
  • Replacement vehicle provisions
  • Claims support
  • Breakdown and legal expenses options
  • Territorial limits and policy conditions

The right policy gives suitable protection for your operation at a price your business is comfortable paying.

Fleet Insurance Terms Explained

Fleet insurance has its own vocabulary. These plain-English definitions will help you complete your requirement and compare offers with confidence.

Any driver policy
Covers anyone who drives your fleet vehicles, provided they meet the policy conditions, such as a minimum age or licence requirement. It can suit businesses whose drivers change often. Read our any driver fleet insurance guide.
Named driver policy
Only the drivers listed on the policy are covered. It can suit businesses with a small, settled team of drivers.
Claims experience
The record of claims made on your fleet, typically over the last three to five years. For a fleet, it plays a similar role to the no-claims discount on a personal policy.
Class of use
What your vehicles are insured to be used for, such as social, domestic and pleasure, commuting or business use. Using a vehicle outside its class of use can affect a claim.
Carriage of own goods
Using your vehicles to transport your own tools, equipment or stock as part of your business, rather than carrying other people's goods for payment.
Hire and reward
Carrying goods or passengers for payment, such as delivery, courier or taxi work. It must be declared, because insurers rate it differently from carriage of own goods.
Goods in transit
Separate cover for the goods or materials carried in your vehicles. A motor fleet policy covers the vehicles, not necessarily their load.
Excess
The amount your business pays towards a claim before the insurer pays the rest. A policy may include both compulsory and voluntary excesses.
Motor Insurance Database (MID)
The UK database of insured vehicles, which the police and DVLA use to check that vehicles are insured. Fleet policyholders often need to add or remove vehicles promptly, so check how your insurer handles updates.
Mid-term adjustment
A change made during the policy year, such as adding a vehicle or a driver. It may lead to an additional premium or a refund.
Telematics
Devices or apps that record how, when and where vehicles are driven. Many businesses use them to manage risk, and some insurers take them into account.
Levels of cover
Comprehensive covers damage to your own vehicles as well as third parties. Third party, fire and theft adds fire and theft cover to third-party liability, and third party only meets the legal minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Gavello different from other fleet insurance comparison services?

Gavello is a digital marketplace rather than a form that passes your enquiry on as a sales lead. You submit your fleet information once, participating providers respond through the platform, and you decide which provider you want to engage with.

Am I buying my insurance from Gavello?

No. Gavello doesn’t sell insurance. We help you find a suitable provider, with the right product and price for your needs, from our panel without you having to speak to each one.

Is Gavello regulated?

Yes. Gavello is a trading style of 1st Tech Group Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (number 14001276), which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under Firm Reference Number 1008478. You can check this on the FCA Financial Services Register.

Are the insurance providers authorised and regulated in the UK?

Gavello works with a carefully selected panel of specialist insurance providers. We check that each provider is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority before it joins, and we carry out regular checks after that.

Will several brokers phone me after I submit my details?

Gavello is designed to avoid the multiple unwanted calls associated with commercial insurance quote forms. Your contact details aren’t shared with providers when your requirement goes to the marketplace. They are passed only to the provider you choose, so you decide who contacts you and when.

How long does it take to receive offers?

You decide how long your request runs. We recommend allowing at least 2–3 business days, particularly for larger or more complex fleets. Offers arrive through Gavello as each provider responds, and we’ll alert you each time.

Is Gavello suitable for small and large fleets?

Yes. Eligibility varies between providers, including the minimum number of vehicles they will insure. Larger fleets may need more underwriting information, vehicle schedules and claims experience, but Gavello is still a practical starting point for reaching specialist providers.

Am I obliged to buy a policy after requesting quotes?

No. Requesting and reviewing offers through Gavello does not oblige you to buy a policy.

Do I have to accept the cheapest offer?

No. Price is only one consideration. Look at the proposed cover, excesses, restrictions, policy conditions and suitability for your business before you decide.

Are the prices shown guaranteed?

Not necessarily. An initial offer may still be subject to validation and underwriting by the provider you choose. Always give accurate information and check the provider’s final terms before buying cover.

What if I've made a mistake in my details?

Don’t worry. Once you’ve chosen a provider, they’ll contact you to check your information. If anything needs updating, they can amend it, although this may change the price, policy features or conditions. You won’t have bought a policy at that stage and are under no obligation to proceed.

Why do fleet insurers charge different prices for the same business?

Every insurer has its own underwriting appetite, rating approach, claims experience and view of particular trades, vehicles and drivers. That is one reason why competition between suitable providers can be valuable.

Can competition lower my fleet insurance premium?

It can help. When several suitable providers respond to the same requirement, you can see how their offers compare instead of relying on a single quote. Competition doesn’t guarantee a lower premium, and price should always be weighed against the cover, excesses and conditions on offer.
